BONDI RESCUE BALI

Visit Network Ten's Bondi Rescue Bali website here.

It's winter on Bondi Beach and most of the lifeguards have drifted away leaving only a few permanent lifeguards to keep watch over their beach. Many lifeguards spend winter in other jobs - but some seek adventure where the sun is still shining and the waves are pounding.

For years Bali has been a favourite winter destination for the Lifeguards. They surf, play and relax. But their Bali counterparts - the Kuta Lifeguards who look after the beach have to cope with a huge influx of tourists from Australia and all over the world. This year the Bondi Lifeguards will be there to help.

Bali is one of the world's great tourist destinations offering sun, sand and surf combined with an exotic culture. And Kuta Beach is at the centre of this international icon. Kuta is a great beach but at the same time a very dangerous one. The arrival of a team of professional lifeguards from Australia's Bondi Beach is just in time for the school holidays.

Both services have much they can learn from each other. The Bondi lifeguards will need to learn quickly and gain an understanding of how the beach works and, more importantly, how the Indonesian Lifeguards do things.

The Bondi Lifeguards will also bring to Bali the latest lifeguarding techniques and equipment. They will help make the beach safer for the flocks of tourists who make their way down from the holiday villas each morning for a day at the beach. Many Australians get into trouble in the waters off Kuta every year, so by helping the Indonesian lifeguards they'll be helping to keep Australian lives safe as well.

This new series examines the meeting of culture and what life is like on one of the world’s most famous surf beaches.
